You're barking up the wrong tree. FreeBSD has always been less dogmatic than Linux. They've always been more corporate-friendly, and happier to exchange ideas both ways. For them, open-source is a tool to get a great operating system built collaboratively. It's not a way of life or a philosophy.

Perforce is a much superior SCM system than CVS, and handles the sort of complicated, multi-way merges that are common in the OS world. Microsoft uses a Perforce derivative, including for NT development. Google and Amazon use Perforce. (The Slashdotters got all upset when they found out Google was using Perforce. I'm sure you're upset too.)

Are you running a computer with a chip made by Intel or AMD? You know, there are open-source chips available. "Free as in freedom," right?

Yup, there's always room for version #2... I don't think it would make any sense to mount a storage volume across availability zone boundaries as it would immediately defeat the whole point of availability zones because you'd be coupling two zones. And with the ability to snapshot your volume and then fire up a new one in a different zone you have an amazing tool available.

For mounting a volume read-only on multiple instances, you can do this using snapshots and cloning. I've described some ideas around this on my blog at http://blog.rightscale.com/2008/04/13/ and when you think about the scales possible it is really breathtaking.

We've been testing the new storage volumes for a while and they really change the game. You can do lots more than run databases, see http://blog.rightscale.com/2008/04/13/ for some ideas. The Amazon folks are on a roll!

With the addition of the storage volumes there's no doubt in my mind anymore: the cloud adopters will have much more computing horsepower and flexibility at their fingertips than those who are still racking their own machines. Cloud computing is going to be as significant for deployment as agile is for software development. You either compute in the cloud or you'll be left behind by your competitors because they can deploy faster, better, and cheaper than you can.

Well, I was just hit by this bot, and my bot trap captured it within 3 page indexes, it hit my index page, one more then went straight for the "bad bot trap". My logs show a blank referrer, and now this bot will never be allowed on my server again.

Its shameful to think that a so called "security" company will blatantly skip the robots.txt file, then seek the section it should not be indexing to begin with. I bet this company would have me arrested if I disregarded the private property sign on its building and started looking over their documents. My bot trap automatically sends the bot to 403 land upon capture.

The robots.txt file needs to be a legally binding agreement, like a "no trespassers" sign.

Billy,

When you say size of database I'm assuming you are referring to the images (not full text which is around 13G last time I checked... but don't quote me on that -- large margin of error )

Images... I don't even have a complete set and I'm at 340G ... I would guess I have something like 75% coverage (including all the different sizes for thumbnails...etc)

Also, very cool on presenting your first batch of findings, send me the link as soon as you can, and if you like I would love to get a proof read or help out (anything to get a sneak preview) -- I would be totally pumped to be included in the acknowledgments section.

Thanks,
Yousef

Graham,
Thanks for your feedback, and for clearing up that matter. From the initial agreement where I'm prompted to sign my name, and email (which I assume has some degree of legal binding) it's really not clear at all that the license used is the GPLv2 --

I think you should advertise it more clearly as it would avoid any future confusion (as I had).

Looks like an interesting platform, I'll have to sink my teeth into the trac wiki and get started.

Expect some How-To articles here soon.

Thanks,
Yousef

Yousef, thanks so much for your interest in Marketcetera. The CLA we have on our site is very similar to the same required by MySQL http://forge.mysql.com/contribute/cla.php and I think few people doubt whether MySQL is open source. So it seems rather harsh to judge us on that, and I think generally that the license that most people are interested in is the one under which you may use the code. The license under which you may use and redistribute our code is the GPL v2, which is an OSI approved license. You can get more information about it here: http://trac.marketcetera.org/trac.fcgi/wiki/Marketcetera/License Thanks, and please let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks. I know about sudo (there's an excellent xkcd comic using it), but when I tried I put it on the "make all" part, so it didn't work. It works now. By the way, one last question...is there some way I can approximate the size of Wikipedia's database? I imagine it's a bit bigger than your Fall 2007 date, but I'm not sure how to get it without downloading everything (which I don't have the space to do). Thanks,

I had to install the same packages as Scotti.

Thanks much for this little tutorial - MLB.com is utterly useless without the latest version of Flash.
