MySQL-python version 1.2.3c1 works without changes with MySQL running, using setup tools 'easy_install'. I originally installed the 64-bit OS X MySQL package and had 64/32-bit problems, so I removed it (you also need to delete the installer package from '/Library/Receipts/') and used the 32-bit package. I also removed the failed MySQL-python install (which failed because of the 64-bit MySQL) with 'easy_install -m MySQL-python', then deleted the egg from the python 'site-packages' directory. I'm also using Python 2.6.
