Importing Winamp playlists into iTunes 7.x

I’ve been struggling for the last couple of days getting my Winamp playlist in iTunes. The playlist in question is massive (over 2000 songs long) and old, I started adding to it in 1997 (?). Itunes would read the file in, and then one of two scenarios would occur:

1) It reads in the file fine, imports the playlist, but doesn’t consolidate songs, so as soon as iTunes is closed, it can no longer find the files in the playlist.

2) It would start processing the file,but bail out, with nothing imported and an empty playlist created.

The trick was to download a more recent version of Winamp, load the play list, save it, and try again. This strongly hints at some incompatibility between older winamp playlists and more recent version of iTunes.

Hope this helps anyone having the same problem.
